The Great Escape of 2009

It's a miracle we even made it at all. After reports that a huge ice/rain storm was brewing, we went into Wpg the night before our flight just to avoid driving on the crappy highways. Good call on our part because we almost couldn't walk across the hotel parking lot to our car on the way to the airport. Then, after a 4 hour delay in Winnipeg airport due to the icy runway, we were finally off to Cuba. The weather in Cuba had been unusually cold for the previous two weeks but the day we arrived it was about +26 and it just got warmer and sunnier from there. Of course we didn't wear enough sunscreen on the first day and burnt our shoulders crispy but that soon subsided and the tanning just got better. I must say, I have never been a Rum drinker but after having the best of the best in the land where it was basically invented - I may now be a convert. Although our resort had the absolute worst food imaginable, the AMAZING beach and nice grounds made up for the food. The town of Varadero is also really quaint and not nearly as commercialized as Mexico. Our day trip into Havana was excellent. What a historical city. Basically, we had an awesome time and can't wait to go back to Cuba some day. I would highly recommend it. Just don't stay at the Sirenis La Salina if you want to eat.

These photos only show a wee snippet of the week we spent in Varadero, Cuba with a one-day trip into Havana. For all you who are STILL not on Facebook, click on the links below to see the rest of our pictures. Enjoy!
